Marco Calleja
Biography
Maltese-born, Marco Calleja is a director, producer, educator, TV host and performer. In Malta, he has worked with various companies on several plays, pantomimes, musicals, and ballets. He also set up his theatre company, Hoi Polloi Theatre Productions in 2004. He then branched out into performing arts education for children and teens by setting up the Hoi Polloi Academy in 2013. Marco moved to London in 2016 to read for an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and graduated in 2017. This fuelled Marco’s passion for theatre devising, movement and interdisciplinary work. He is greatly interested in revisiting existing work through a new contemporary lens and in creating new theatre-work which critiques and questions current issues whilst engaging and moving its audiences. Having an undergraduate degree in the life sciences, Marco is also interested in exploring how the arts and the sciences can cross-over and inform each other. Directing credits include: The Wizard of Oz – Panto (MFCC, 2012), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (MCC, 2011), This Thing Called Love (Teatru Manoel, 2006) and CATS – the musical (VCT, 2019). His performing credits include: The Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz (MCC, 2018), Amadeus (Teatru Manoel, 2018), Mamma Mia (MCC, 2018), Little John in Robin Hood – the panto (Teatru Manoel, 2015), Fiddler on the Roof (Teatru Manoel, 2014) and Paris in Romeo & Juliet (Saint James Cavalier, 2012). His television credits include: Daniel in Santa Monika, Bazzati in Deheb il-Karta and It-Tmien Nota. Marco is currently the producer and host of #KikkraTe .
