Malta lacks comprehensive and reliable literature about the history of theatre-making in the country. To address this, the Department of Theatre Studies has created structures and opportunities for the study of theatre in Malta in its various manifestations. This initiative is also possible thanks to the contribution of the Ministry for Education. To take this research to the next level, the Department of Theatre Studies is collaborating with Teatru Malta to offer a scholarship to pursue a PhD in Theatre Studies at the University of Malta, called Siparju.

The selected candidate will be working on a thesis relating to the history of theatre in Malta, as agreed with the project supervisors and Teatru Malta. The project will entail different methods of collecting data, including working on archival material and interviewing practitioners, and will aim at making an important contribution to the acquisition of knowledge about the history of theatre in Malta as well as disseminating and popularising literature about the subject that is both historically and theoretically sound.
