Francis Ebejer Bust – Unveiled!

A press conference held today at Spazju Kreattiv was held in commemoration of the 25th anniversary since the death of Francis Ebejer, Malta’s foremost playwright, whose work is being staged this weekend.

Moreover, the Francis Ebejer Project was formally launched by artistic directors Dr Toni Sant (Spazju Kreattiv), Kenneth Zammit Tabona (Teatru Manoel) and Sean Buhagiar (Teatru Malta) with an unveiling of a cast of Ebejer from the original bronze bust by artist Anton Agius, at Spazju Kreattiv.

The bronze bust, which was commissioned by Spazju Kreattiv in collaboration with the late writer’s son, artist, Damian Ebejer, is part of a series of long term initiatives that are to stem from the Francis Ebejer Project and are aimed at celebrating the memory, life and legacy of the Maltese literary giant whilst inspiring new theatrical work which, like Ebejer’s work at the time, challenges the boundaries of theatre today.

Sean Buhagiar also mentioned that as part of the “Siparju” programme, an initiative towards a critical analysis of Malta’s theatre history, Teatru Malta aims to see the publication of a collection of Ebejer’s works.

Furthermore, this evening; Teatru Malta in co-production with Teatru Manoel, and in collaboration with dance company ZfinMalta, will see the contemporary adaptation of Ebejer’s modern classic BOULEVARD premiere at the beloved Manoel Theatre! The re-adaptation which also forms part of this newly launched project, is directed by Toni Attard and choreographed by ZfinMalta’s Paolo Mangiola. BOULEVARD which will run for the whole weekend until the 9th of September, sees original cast members Karmen Azzopardi and Paul Xuereb reprise their coveted roles as part of a guest appearance on the very same stage they premiered on in 1964.

The vibrant performance also features theatre favourites Antonella Axisa, Thomas Camilleri, Stephen Mintoff and Aaron Fenech as well as dancers Keith Micallef, Martina Zammit,  Nicola Micallef, Jure Gostincar and Abel Hernandez from ZfinMalta.
