Jimmy Grima
Biography
Jonathan aka Jimmy Grima is an artist, designer and curator working in the fields of graphic arts, performance and film. In 2009 he co-founded the rubberbodies collective of which he is the artistic director. Born and raised on the central Mediterranean island of Malta, Jimmy’s theatre works are part of an ongoing investigation into human nature and human social contexts. He pushes boundaries by bringing artists and people from different backgrounds to collaborate together in creating events, community art projects, theatre, dance, film and installations.
The collective has been commissioned by the Malta Arts Festival, Teatru Manoel, Science in the City and the Malta Arts Council exploring unconventional places and collaborating with numerous public institutions such as Heritage Malta for Oracle (2013) at Ħaġar Qim Temples; Lore of the Sea (2011) at the Malta Maritime Museum, 100 (2011) at Dock No. 1, and Grandma Temi and the Crimean Fever (2014) at the Ministry of Health at Palazzo Castellania. In 2015, Grima led the collective into a long term community research-led project, The Windrose Project (2015—), a commission by the Valletta 2018 Foundation. He has also co-produced In-Nassaba: Song of a Bird with Teatru Malta, the recently founded national theatre company.
In 2007, Jimmy started his training at the Dartington College of Arts, undertaking a degree in Theatre and Digital Art. Currently, Grima is based between Malta and Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he is pursuing a Masters in Theatre at Das Graduate School, University of the Arts, Amsterdam.
