We believe that a thriving theatre community needs adequate theatre spaces that cater for the diverse and eclectic needs of a vibrant theatre programme. Because of this, we launched the Theatre Spaces Funding Scheme, through which eight Maltese theatres have been given financial support in their quest to carry out major structural works, resulting in a more functional theatre space. The scheme was jointly managed by Teatru Malta and the Arts Council Malta, and the theatres were chosen following the identification of 72 theatres through a national survey, Spazji Teatrali – A Catalogue of Theatres in Malta and Gozo.

The theatres that benefited from the first strand of the scheme in order to make the spaces more functional and accessible to artists, while decentralising theatre spaces in Malta, are:

  • Teatru Metanoia in Luqa,
  • Teatru Astra in Victoria
  • MADC Clubhouses in St Venera,
  • Teatru Salesjan in Sliema
  • The Archbishop’s Seminary in Rabat

These five theatres received a total of €60,000.

The second strand of the scheme saw theatres  benefit from a total of €1 million that is currently being used to address major structural works in these buildings, while helping decentralise Malta’s theatre spaces. The theatres are:

  • Teatru Salesjan in Sliema
  • Teatru Pandora in Żejtun
  • Blue Arena theatre in Żabbar
