L-AVVIZI: May 2021

Throughout May, Teatru Malta will be going over their Klassi tas-Surmast applications and planning what lies ahead for its participants and hosts Cheek by Jowl. The adult workshop for participants over the age of 21 will take place in Gozo this September and will cater for theatre practitioners already working in the sector. We can’t wait to get this going!

More of our upcoming productions are getting a headstart, namely Manwel Manwel, our coproduction with FCN, which will celebrate the centenary from the death of Manwel Dimech – the socialist, philosopher, journalist, writer, poet and social reformer. The show will be staged this December in a surprise location, the director of this piece will also be announced in the coming weeks, as the first ever guest of our brand new podcast series Teatru Malta Redifjuxin a new platform where we will be shedding a special light on our 2021 R&D journey as well as other interesting topics we’re sure our audiences will find entertaining. Make sure to give us a listen.

Our contemporary dance-theatre production for 2022, Nouveau Riche, is also well into its in R&D. With April auditions for two of its main roles cast and locked, writer and director Simon Bartolo is working closely with movement director Dorian Mallia and collaborators Moveo Dance Company to put the pieces of this quirky invention together. More from that soon on our socials – stay tuned.

The European Theatre convention’s project Renaissance will also be premiering this month! Teatru Malta is one of the twenty-two European Theatre Convention (ETC) theatres, from 18 European countries to have taken part in this project which draws on philosophy, fantasy, and the strain of living under a pandemic to produce an original series of short drama films that will be available to watch at home for free. Follow bright eyed Leah as she discovers the magical world of books and celebrates her passion for reading and theatre.

The short film stars Leah Grech & Ian Moore with cinematography by Karl Andrew Micallef, original music by Yasmin Kuymizakis and is written and directed by Sean Buhagiar. Many thanks to Palazzo Falson and Guttenberg Press for making this “dream” possible
