Exciting News: “The Best European Show” Takes Center Stage!
Teatru Malta is thrilled to announce the kick-off to an international theatrical co-production that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before! “The Best European Show,” is a collaborative project between five esteemed theatres that are part of the European Theatre Convention, which will tour and premier in Malta in February 2024. With perspectives from five different countries, this production promises to deliver a satirical exploration of how we perceive and evaluate theatre throughout the continent.
Representing the rich tapestry of European culture and creativity, the participating theaters include Teatr Kochanowskiego w Opolu from Poland, TeatroDue Parma from Italy, SNG Nova Gorica from Slovenia, Teatru Malta from Malta, and Teatri Kombëtar i Kosovës from Kosovo. These theatres have come together to create a production that delves into the intricate fabric of European theatre criticism.
One of the most exciting aspects of this production is its diverse cast, featuring talented actors hailing from each of the five countries involved. Teatru Malta’s Artistic Director, Sean Buhagiar in the role of Dramaturg, together with Gianni Selvaggi and Philip Leone Ganado, the selected actors from Malta, have embarked on this journey joining a team of 20 professionals. This international ensemble promises to bring a multitude of perspectives and experiences to the stage, enriching the narrative and adding depth to the portrayal of European theatre dynamics.
The creative minds behind this International production recently converged in Opole in Poland, and together with the cast, they have ventured on an intensive 8-week rehearsal period leading to a show premiere due in October 2023. Under the direction of the esteemed Haris Pašović, the team is hard at work, shaping each scene and refining every nuance to ensure that the audience is treated to a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.
Following its premiere in Poland, the show will then tour the other 4 theatres with shows happening both this year and the next.
The show will premier on the following dates:
- Opole, Poland: October 13, 2023
- Parma, Italy: October 21, 2023
- Valletta, Malta: February 9, 2024
- Nova Gorica, Slovenia: April 16, 2024
- Prishtina, Kosovo: April 25, 2024
The thought-provoking text has been penned by Marko Bratuš and Haris Pašović, with the latter also taking on the role of director. Their combined creative genius promises to challenge perceptions and offer a fresh perspective on the European theatrical landscape.
In collaboration with the ETC Development Grant (co-funded by the European Union Creative EU), Teatru Malta has ensured a €5,000 grant for all the necessary resources required by this group of theatres to bring their collective vision to life. As the anticipation builds, stay tuned for behind-the-scenes glimpses, exclusive interviews, and updates on the journey of bringing “The Best European Show” to life. Teatru Malta is proud to form part of this exciting collaboration and to be working on bringing this show to Malta in February 2024.
